Growing up, I faced challenges that shaped my understanding of the importance of community, resilience, and love. These experiences gave me the strength to not only push through but also reach out and help others—especially young people who may feel like life is full of obstacles. I always knew I wanted to be that person who could inspire others and provide the tools and resources I didn’t have growing up.
That’s why I created POWER—Preparing Our Women for Everyday Readiness. POWER was created to fill the gaps that so many young women face, providing them with the skills, mentorship, and support they need to build their confidence and create opportunities for their future. It’s more than just skills training—POWER is a space where young women share their stories, find their voices, and uplift each other. We walk together, supporting one another through every step of the journey.
In addition to POWER, I oversee and support various other initiatives at the Dreamcatcher Initiative (DCI), including our DreamCutz program, which provides pre-vocational training in barbershop and hairstyling skills for young men and women. I also manage other youth-centered programs that focus on life skills, emotional resilience, and social empowerment. These initiatives are designed to ensure that all youth, regardless of their circumstances, have access to resources and opportunities that help them thrive.
As Senior Director of Programming and Chief Operating Officer at DCI, I ensure everything we do is grounded in heart, care, and a commitment to the community. Whether it’s building partnerships, developing new programs, or advocating for at-risk and system-involved youth, I’m dedicated to making sure DCI is a space for real, lasting change.
This work is deeply personal, and my public health and advocacy background allows me to turn vision into action. Through all of our programs at DCI, I’ve seen firsthand the transformation that happens when young people are given the tools, mentorship, and space to rise above their challenges. We’re not just preparing them for today but equipping them to lead tomorrow.
"DCI wasn’t just a dream; it was a necessity,” says Alexis B. Major. “Our youth and community deserve access to vital resources, support, and services, along with a safe space to truly be themselves and embrace their unique experiences.”
